Minecraft Pigs are one of the most useful and versatile passive mobs in Minecraft. They’ve been here since the early days and continue to make our Minecraft lives just a bit easier. Keep reading to see our rundown of this precious little porcus.

What is a Minecraft Pig?

Minecraft pigs are one of the 22 current passive mobs in Minecraft: Java Edition. They are commonly found pretty much everywhere in the Minecraft overworld, and you really can’t go too far without bumping into one. Like the Minecraft horse, you can also mount this animal.

Their silly pink faces make them instantly recognisable even from great distances, and unlike their cows and sheep contemporaries, they stand at only 1 block high. They’ve been in the game for a very long time and like Creepers or Steve, have become a part of Minecraft’s visual style that is instantly recognisable across the world

What do Minecraft Pigs do?

Pigs are probably the most versatile passive mob in the game, as they have many features associated with them, ranging from the useful to the outright bizarre. Let’s run through them, shall we?

Keep you fed

Unless you’re going for a vegan-only survival playthrough, it’s safe to say that you’re probably going to need to chow down on a pig or two during your time in Minecraft’s beautiful but dangerous world.

There’s plenty of things that’ll knock your health and hunger bars down, and a quick raw pork chop will restore 3 points to your hunger meter or 8 points if you take the time to cook it. What’s more is that pigs can be easily farmed as they don’t take up much space and can be bred easily using carrots, beetroot and potatoes.

Offer their transportation services

For a long while Minecraft didn’t have horses and there was no real form of transport other than pre-made Minecart systems. Yet bizarrely, from a very early stage we’ve always been able to ride pigs.

Though the practicality of the pig riding system was only ironed out later on. These days though you can ride pigs easily and with some pretty good speed too! Just slap a saddle on any pig and use a carrot on a stick to guide them in the direction you want to go. Who needs vehicle mods, eh?

Look cute!

Yes they might be a resource for food, but have you taken a look at that face? Thousands of players have been won over by these precious pink mobs through their passive behaviour and cute little faces.

What’s good about Minecraft Pigs?

✔Simple to breed and house

✔Passive and always non-hostile

✔Can be ridden

What’s not so good about Minecraft Pigs?

X They aren’t rare

X Not the most exciting mobs in the game

X Drops very common items

Minecraft Pig Must-knows:

  • Pigs were actually the reason Creepers were added into the game. After a failed attempt to insert a pig into the game, Notch was inspired by the unusual shape and design. And so a Minecraft icon was born!
  • Pigs were first added way back in 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST in September, 2009.
  • If struck by lightning, pigs will turn into Zombie Pigmen.
  • Piglets, although smaller than adult pigs, actually have the same sized head, just on a much smaller body.
  • They are the oldest mob in the game out of all of the passive mobs.
  • You can travel through a space that is 1 block high by riding a pig.
