By default you are only provided with 60 seconds to stay underwater. However using enchantments and potions you are able to stay and fight under the sea for a few more extra seconds.

When you combine the respiration enchantment with water breathing potions, you will be able to stay underwater for a much longer period of time.

This is really helpful if you're looking to collect items from the bottom of the ocean or if you're fighting against marine mobs.

The water breathing potions are also really effective when used with an oxygen tank. This will give you unlimited air while you're swimming underwater.

If you're looking to explore the deep sea, then you should definitely consider using the respiration enchantment and water breathing potions.

This will allow you to stay underwater for extended periods of time and will also give you the ability to see marine mobs better.

Respiration increases the amount of time one can breathe underwater by 15 seconds with each enchantment level, in addition to the standard 15 seconds.

By level, it offers a 10% chance of not taking drowning damage each second. The maximum level that may be acquired without commands is level 3, for a total duration of 60 seconds underwater before drowning sets in.

Do note that Wearing a turtle shell extends this time by an additional 10 seconds. Also do know that as mentioned above you can enchant it with the respiration enchantment.

Overall this will give you a maximum of 70 more seconds underwater. Combined with the default time you can stay underwater before you start to drown you will get a total of 130 seconds.
