The Dungeon of Doom – Minecraft Dungeon is like if you took Minecraft’s basic dungeons and ramped them up by eleven. No more boring samey structures we’ve all seen before, now we have a fully designed dungeon to explore! What’s more is that there’s tons of other cool content included too, so the experience is unique for even those who play custom Minecraft maps regularly.
What’s The Dungeon of Doom – Minecraft Dungeon like to play?
The Dungeon of Doom – Minecraft Dungeon takes a lot of inspiration from RPG-style games, not only in its dark setting but also in the way its class and item systems work. Classes are divided like other RPG games you know and love. There’s a warrior, a mage, a ranger, you get the idea. It’s a cute detail, especially seeing how Minecraft doesn’t have any classes of its own. The creator admits that the map is heavily inspired by Dungeons and Dragons as well as many other tabletop RPGs, which explains a whole lot.
Throughout my time playing the map I felt like I had shrunk down into the world of a detailed tabletop game and was getting to really experience the scenarios we’ve all roleplayed a thousand times in our parents’ basements.
The style and build quality of the map is fairly solid. It looks great and manages to maintain the vibe of Minecraft’s vanilla dungeons. That said, it never becomes a thing of total beauty, but the confined spaces create enough atmosphere and ambience that you don’t feel the need to have your socks blown off.
One of the biggest drawbacks to this map is, like many tabletop games, you’re sometimes left feeling like you don’t know how to progress and are left totally mystified on where to go next. There were times I just had to continuously walk around because I had missed something somewhere and there’s no hints or help sheet provided.
This might differ between players though, and you might have more or less success than I did. Additionally there are a lot of spelling errors in this map, while not totally offensive, brings you out of what is otherwise a very enjoyable experience.
