What is Minecraft Dungeons, exactly?
Minecraft Dungeons is an isometric action-RPG of the hack-and-slash genre which is set in the world of Minecraft. It was created by Mojang with the help of Unreal Engine 4. It is inspired by many of the previous classic dungeon crawlers such as Diablo, with a mix of free play style from Fable and The Elder Scrolls.
So what do we mean by free play style? It’s not a sandbox game like the original Minecraft but there are no classes. Meaning you can play as any role you want and switch between different sets to quickly modify your playstyle to suit the current circumstances.
You are going to explore dungeons and branching levels while collecting loot and getting stronger. You can team up with up to three allies. As we mentioned above, there is no crafting or mining but there will be tons and tons of mobs to slay, loot to collect, and gear to grind in order to become the strongest player you could possibly be.
How is it to play with Minecraft Dungeons
Before the game was reviewed and there was nothing but plans and ideas stated by Mojang we originally worried that this game would appear to be too easy to veteran RPG players. However, after we saw how unique the combat is for an isometric game we suddenly realized that this game was potentially going to be big.
You get to venture through various dungeons and levels which are randomly generated. This means that there won’t be a guide on Youtube or Google which will allow you to breeze through any level quickly. You need to explore and smash mobs along the way just like exploring a dungeon in the sandbox game. Along with gameplay, you will be getting loot, enchanting your gear, and collecting artifacts to gain special abilities.
Since there are no classes you are free to change your playstyle anyway you want. Your character’s build is based on the armor you wear. So if you would like to switch from a bulky tank to a swift archer, all you need to do is change your armor and equip a ranged weapon. This gives you the versatility you need to play through any circumstance.
Also, the game gets harder as you get stronger. So there will be no instance that you will be overpowering anything. Plus, did we forget to mention that you get to battle tons of unique mini-bosses and bosses? Multiplayer wise, when you join a party the dungeon adjusts the difficulty as well since you are allowed to join or leave a session anytime. So there are no queues or raid instances like your regular MMO.
What is Minecraft Dungeons’ story?
The whole plot of the game isn’t very complicated. Since Minecraft was originally marketed for children you can’t expect deep character development and plot twists rather it’s a very straight forward battle of good versus evil. Mojang has even admitted in an interview that the game does not focus on a massive narrative that you go through. Rather it focuses on combat and character progression pretty much like your classic dungeon crawlers.
The main protagonist of Minecraft Dungeons is called the “Arch-illager”. He controls a powerful artifact that allows him to control mobs, use destructive arcane powers, and more. So how did he become the villain? Well, the lore is pretty simple as expected. He was bullied and disrespected by other villagers when he was still a normal villager. This made him angry and mad at everyone. He then finds the powerful artifact which gives him his powers. Just like the Grinch who stole Christmas, he basically turned bad and pledged revenge to everyone who shunned him. So he attacks other villages, and summons hordes of mobs to destroy everything in his path.
